Productivity Tools vs Productivity

Lately I’ve allowed myself to be too lax in my projects; both personal and freelance.  I’ve found myself to making a million and one excuses not to do something, much like this guy.

Often times I distract myself under the guise of productivity—as such I mean the search for productivity tools.  I’ve tried myriad such products and methods.  Usually I’m more consumed with the thought of being productive than I am with actually being productive.

Like what I’m doing right now:  searching the Internet to support my theory of distractedness being something all creators experience, or at least have had dealings with.

I love this quote:

“If you want reasons not to create, they will be plentiful and easy to find.”
RonenV

I’m sure much to the author’s chagrin, this reminds me of Jesus’ parable of the Wide and Narrow Gates:

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”
—Matthew 7:13 (ESV)

Pissing away time and creativity is easy and many will do it.  Such is the wide gate.  But the narrow gate, which few will find and enter, will lead to creativity and success; however you define that.

What keeps you, Artist or Writer, on that path to being productive?  How do you break the bonds of distraction and dilatory?  How do you see your work through to completion?

I’d love to know.
